Kids Furniture Safety Standards – What Every Pakistani Parent Should Know

Safety is the one thing that should never be compromised when buying kids furniture. Yet many parents focus mainly on price and design, and don’t ask the questions that actually matter for their child’s safety.

Here is a straightforward guide to what safe kids furniture looks like.

Edge Safety – The First Thing to Check

Run your hands along all edges and corners of any furniture you are considering. All edges should be rounded or have soft edge banding applied. Sharp 90-degree corners are a genuine hazard – a child running past a bed or desk can cut themselves badly. This is especially critical for study tables and the corners of wardrobes.

Stability Test

Before buying, physically test the furniture. Push it, shake it, sit on it (for beds and chairs). Quality furniture should not wobble, creak excessively, or feel like it would tip. A wardrobe or bookshelf that is top-heavy is a tip-over risk.

Always anchor wardrobes and bookshelves to the wall with brackets. This takes 10 minutes and can prevent a catastrophic accident.

Materials and Finishes

For kids furniture, the finish on surfaces matters. Paints and laminates used should be non-toxic. At Wali Kids Furniture, we use lamination plywood with finishes that are safe for children’s contact. Avoid furniture with strong chemical smells — this suggests solvent-based finishes that off-gas harmful compounds, especially in warm weather.

Bunk Bed Safety Specifics

Bunk beds require special attention:

  • The gap between the guardrail and mattress must be less than 5cm – a child’s head should not be able to pass through
  • The guardrail must be on both sides of the upper bunk, not just the open side
  • The ladder must be firmly attached and not move when used
  • The weight limit of the upper bunk must exceed your child’s current weight by a significant margin

Drawer Safety

Drawers in kids furniture should have anti-slam mechanisms and, ideally, anti-pull-out stops so a child cannot pull a heavy drawer completely out and onto themselves. Check that drawer handles are smooth with no sharp edges.

No Small Detachable Parts

For furniture used in rooms with young children (under 5), check that there are no decorative knobs, small buttons, or detachable pieces that could be swallowed or cause a choking hazard.
