How to Prepare Your Child’s Room for Pakistan’s Extreme Seasons

Pakistan experiences some of the most extreme seasonal variation in the world. Summers in Punjab can reach 45°C or above. Winters in northern areas bring freezing temperatures. Monsoon brings high humidity. These extremes don’t just affect adults – they significantly impact children’s sleep quality, comfort, and health. Here’s how to prepare a child’s bedroom for each season.

Summer Preparation

Ventilation and cooling: Position the bed away from direct sunlight streaming through windows. Use blackout curtains or heavy blinds on windows that face the afternoon sun – these can reduce room temperature by 5-7°C. Ensure the fan or air conditioner can adequately cool the room. Children are more sensitive to heat during sleep than adults.

Bedding: Switch to lightweight cotton sheets and minimal blankets. Cotton breathes and draws moisture away from the body better than synthetic fabrics. A thin cotton summer quilt is sufficient for most Pakistani summer nights even with air conditioning.

Furniture care: High temperatures and dry conditions can cause some furniture to expand slightly. Keep wardrobes from being packed too tightly in summer as drawers can become harder to open and close.

Monsoon Preparation

Humidity is the main challenge. High humidity causes clothes in wardrobes to develop a musty smell. Place moisture-absorbing sachets or a small silica gel packet in the wardrobe and in storage drawers. Open windows and wardrobes on dry days to ventilate.

Keep soft toys, books, and paper items away from any walls that might develop condensation. A slight gap between furniture and exterior walls allows air circulation.

Mattress care: Ensure the mattress is not placed directly on a damp floor. Beds with elevated frames allow air circulation underneath the mattress, preventing moisture build-up.

Winter Preparation

Warmth and insulation: Heavy curtains on windows significantly reduce heat loss and make the room warmer without additional heating costs. Thermal or blackout curtains serve double purpose – keeping light out in summer and cold out in winter.

Bedding upgrade: Layered bedding – sheets, a blanket, and a quilt – can be added or removed based on temperature. This is more practical than a single very heavy duvet. Children can regulate themselves better with layers.

Year-Round Furniture Care

Quality laminate plywood furniture handles Pakistan’s extreme season changes well. The laminate surface is resistant to moisture and temperature changes. Keep furniture away from direct water sources, wipe spills immediately, and avoid placing furniture directly against exterior walls in areas prone to dampness.
