Weighted blankets: While not furniture, a weighted blanket is one of the most evidence-supported tools for children with sensory processing challenges or anxiety. Pair it with a good, firm mattress.
Creating Independence
For children with physical disabilities, the principle of maximum independence is paramount:
- Wardrobes with handles and drawers at the child’s accessible height
- Open shelving for frequently used items so nothing requires reaching, bending, or opening doors
- A study table at wheelchair height if the child uses a wheelchair
- Good lighting throughout the room with switches at accessible heights
