One day your toddler is safely tucked in their cot, and the next they are trying to climb out of it at 2am – or they are simply too tall for it anymore. The transition from baby cot to a proper kids bed is a milestone that every family goes through, and how you handle it makes a significant difference to how smoothly it goes.
When is the Right Time to Transition?
There is no universal age – children develop at different rates. But the usual indicators that it is time are:
- The child is consistently trying to climb out of the cot (this is a safety issue – transition immediately)
- The child is longer than 90cm (the cot is becoming too small)
- A new baby is on the way and needs the cot
- The child is consistently asking for a “big bed”
Most children transition somewhere between 18 months and 3 years old. Younger than 18 months is generally too early unless there is a safety reason.
Making the New Bed Feel Special
The transition goes smoothly when the child is excited about it. Build anticipation positively:
- Let the child help choose the new bed or at least the bedding colour
- Talk about it as an exciting milestone – “You’re getting your big kid bed!”
- Let them help set it up – put the pillowcase on, arrange their stuffed animals
- On the first night, make it a small celebration
Safety for the First Few Months
Young toddlers who have only known the enclosed walls of a cot may roll off a big bed in the first weeks. Solutions include:
- A toddler rail attached to the side of the bed
- Placing the mattress on the floor initially for a few months
- A low bed frame close to the floor (Montessori floor beds are excellent for this transition)
- Placing soft pillows or a folded blanket beside the bed for the first month
Dealing with Resistance
Some children are excited about the transition. Others find it genuinely distressing. If your child resists, don’t rush it – wait a few more weeks and try again. Never make the transition feel like a punishment or like they are being forced out of their cot.
If the transition is linked to a new baby needing the cot, make the change at least 6 to 8 weeks before the baby arrives so the toddler doesn’t feel displaced by the new sibling.
The First Few Nights
Expect some disruption. Some children get out of bed repeatedly. Some call for parents. Some fall asleep on the floor next to the bed. This is completely normal. Gently return them to bed each time with minimal fuss. Consistency is the key – within a week or two, most children settle into their new bed happily.
