Preparing the nursery is one of the most exciting parts of welcoming a new baby. It is also, for first-time parents especially, one of the most confusing. What do you really need? What can wait? What should you prioritise?
Here is a practical guide from Pakistani parents’ perspective.
The Essential Furniture for a Nursery
Baby cot – The most essential item. Where your baby will sleep for the first 18-24 months. Choose one with adjustable base height so you can lower it as the baby grows and begins to pull themselves up.
Changing table or changing mat – A dedicated surface for nappy changes protects your back and keeps supplies organised. A changing table with drawers underneath stores nappies, wipes, and clothing.
Storage – Babies have surprisingly many things. A small wardrobe or chest of drawers for tiny clothes is essential. A basket or small shelf for nappy-changing supplies.
Chair for feeding – If you are nursing, a comfortable armchair in the nursery makes midnight feeds much more manageable. This is often forgotten and sorely missed.
What Can Wait
- A proper study table – years away from being needed
- A full wardrobe – a small chest of drawers is sufficient for infant clothing
- A bookshelf – a small basket of board books is fine for the first year
Colour and Ambiance for a Nursery
Keep it calm. Soft, muted colours – cream, pale yellow, mint, light grey – create a peaceful environment for sleep, which is exactly what a nursery needs to be. Avoid bright primary colours or busy patterns on the walls.
Blackout curtains are one of the most practical investments for a nursery. Babies sleep better in darkness, and in Pakistan’s bright summers, the sun rises early.
Temperature Matters Enormously
Babies cannot regulate their body temperature well. The nursery should be kept at a comfortable, consistent temperature. In summer, ensure the room has proper ventilation or air conditioning. In winter, ensure it is warm enough.
Avoid placing the cot near an air conditioner unit, fan, or directly under a window.
Think Ahead
Babies grow incredibly fast. When buying nursery furniture, think about how it will be used in two or three years. A convertible cot that becomes a toddler bed saves money. A chest of drawers that will still be useful when the child is 5 or 6 years old is a better investment than a specifically baby-themed piece.
