How to Choose the Right Mattress for Your Child – A Pakistani Parent’s Guide

Parents spend hours choosing the right bed frame and barely five minutes on the mattress. This is backwards. The mattress is what your child actually sleeps on. It determines whether they wake up well-rested or with a sore back. It affects their posture as their spine develops. It is arguably the most important furniture purchase you will make for your child.

Here is everything you need to know about choosing the right mattress in Pakistan.

Firmness is the Most Important Factor for Children

Children need firmer mattresses than adults. Their bodies are lighter and their spines are still developing. A mattress that is too soft allows the spine to sink into an unnatural curve during sleep, which over months and years can contribute to postural problems.

A medium-firm to firm mattress is the right choice for almost all children. It should feel supportive rather than cloud-like. Many parents test mattresses by sitting on them for 30 seconds and thinking “this feels comfortable.” But lying down for a full night’s sleep on a soft mattress is a completely different experience.

Mattress Types Available in Pakistan

Spring mattresses (Bonnell or pocket coil): The most common type in Pakistan. Spring mattresses provide good support and last well. Pocket coil springs are more expensive but move independently, which reduces motion transfer – useful when a sibling shares the bed. Bonnell springs are linked and more affordable.

Foam mattresses: High-density foam mattresses are increasingly popular and available at good prices in Pakistan. They conform to the body’s shape and are generally firmer than spring options. Look for density markings – higher density foam lasts longer and maintains its shape better.

Coir mattresses: Made from compressed coconut fibre. Very firm and completely natural. Popular for young children and babies. Excellent for Pakistan’s climate as they breathe well and resist moisture.

Memory foam: Soft and contouring. Generally not recommended for young children as they are too soft and retain heat. Better for teenagers or adults.

Size Considerations

For a standard single bed in Pakistan, a mattress of 36 inches wide by 72 or 75 inches long is standard. Always measure your bed frame before buying. The mattress should fit the frame with minimal gaps – gaps are both a safety risk for young children and make sleeping uncomfortable.

For bunk beds, keep the mattress thickness to 6 inches maximum for the upper bunk to maintain safe guardrail clearance.

Waterproof Protection is Essential

For children under 7 especially, a waterproof mattress protector is non-negotiable. It protects the mattress from accidents, spills, and sweat, dramatically extending its lifespan. Buy one at the same time as the mattress.

How Long Should a Kids Mattress Last?

A good quality mattress should last 7 to 10 years. Signs it needs replacing: visible sagging in the middle, a child waking up with back or neck pain, visible lumps or uneven surface. Never buy a second-hand mattress for a child.
