This question comes up constantly in our store. Parents come in looking for a bed for their 8 or 10-year-old and they are not sure whether to buy a single or just go straight to a double. Let me break it down clearly.
Single Beds – The Case For Them
A standard single bed in Pakistan is typically 36 inches wide by 72 or 75 inches long. For children up to around 14-15 years, a single bed is perfectly comfortable. Children don’t need as much space as adults to sleep well.
Single beds are better for:
- Smaller rooms – they take up less floor space
- Younger children – easier to get in and out of
- Sharing rooms – two singles or a bunk bed is more practical than a double
- Budget – single beds are significantly less expensive
A well-chosen single bed with a good mattress is the ideal sleeping environment for most Pakistani children.
Double Beds for Children – When Does It Make Sense?
A double or “full” bed is around 54 inches wide. It makes sense for:
- Teenagers, especially tall ones, who have outgrown a single
- Children who tend to move a lot in their sleep and need more space
- Situations where a sibling or cousin frequently stays overnight
- Larger rooms where a single would look too small
One thing to be careful about: children who start sleeping in very large beds sometimes develop the habit of sleeping with excessive pillows and cushions around them, which can disrupt their sleep quality.
The Triple Bed Option
Triple beds — three levels or a unique design with three sleeping surfaces – are popular in Pakistani homes with multiple children. They are a brilliant space-saving solution when three kids share one room.
Our Recommendation
For children aged 5 to 12, a single bed is almost always the right choice. For teenagers 13 and above, if the room allows it and the budget permits, a double bed makes sense as it will serve them into adulthood. For families with multiple children sharing a room, a bunk bed or triple bed design is the most practical solution.
